The role of a Trainer
Introduction
You are reading this because you have expressed an interest in working as a freelance trainer for Teach Peace. You will already have experience in the field of cultivating peace in schools. Our approach is focused on school teachers; you will be mentoring them in their journey to become Peace Champions, empowering them to set up a project in their school, and delivering the training that the school needs. We advocate co-creation; you will listen to the school and help shape the project accordingly. As a Teach Peace trainer, you will recommend that the school adopts some Teach Peace exercises. However, there is not a Teach Peace curriculum as such; you will be using material with which you are already familiar.
Please read the About section to find out more about the project in general.
Qualifications
Teach Peace is looking for Trainers who are:
Experienced in training school staff in tools for inner peace and outer peace
Experienced in training school teachers in introducing these tools to students
Trainer roles
Trainers can act for Teach Peace in one, or both, of two roles:
Mentoring school teachers as they become Peace Champions in their school
Directing a project in a school
Mentoring
School teachers who are practising meditation / mindfulness / compassion as part of their personal path often wish to establish a project in their school but do not have the knowledge or experience to do so. Your role as mentor is to accompany these teachers, supporting them on their journey to establishing a project in their school, and giving them what they need.
Guide budget: 300€ for 6 hours mentoring [both 1-to-1 and in small groups] over four months for each teacher that you mentor. Teach Peace will match school teachers to you.
Directing
If you already have potential connections with schools, Teach Peace can fund you getting a project established in a school. The directing role has a sequence of phases:
Pitching
Drawing on your networks and previous connections, you approach different schools proposing a Teach Peace project. This phase is successful when a school agrees to run a project. The school agrees that we add its name to the list of participating schools on the Teach Peace website.
Guide budget: 200€ for 5 hours work pitching to schools and finding a school who will engage.
Shaping
The Teach Peace project will need to be tailored to the school’s unique circumstances. In dialogue with school senior management, you will define the shape of the project. You will rely on programme content that you are already familiar with. This phase is successful when the school commits to training at least 8 teachers in the programme and to reaching at least 150 students in the first year.
Guide budget: 200€ for 5 hours work dialoguing with senior management and getting them to commit. You present a plan and budget to Teach Peace. The budget is €5,000 per school for the first year.
Training
Using the programmes and content that you are familiar with, you train at least 8 teachers in the school. This training will be about 18 hours: e.g. an 8-week course in mindfulness and emotional health, 1.5 hours per week in twilight sessions, some sessions in person and some on Zoom. Then one full day focusing on how staff will introduce peace-tools to students. This phase is successful when the teachers are ready to introduce peace-tools to students and know how and when they are going to do it.
Guide budget: 1500€ for 18 hours training @ €80/hour plus 600€ for 15 hours preparation time @ €40/hour).
Co-delivering and mentoring
Teachers new to embodying and sharing peace-tools with students find it helpful to learn first-hand from experienced educators like yourself. They also appreciate tips and feedback from your classroom observations. You will be present in school to observe how delivery is going, and offer feedback and advice accordingly. This phase is successful when the teachers have shared peace-tools with students, and students are familiar with short (3-minute) guided exercises in class, for example at the beginning of certain lessons.
Guide budget: 400€ for a day in-school, observing teachers, giving feedback and mentoring teachers
Documenting
As part of documenting the project, you will have organised the taking of photos and video footage (that can be used in Teach Peace communication) as well as some questionnaires and short interviews with students.
Guide budget: 600€ for administration, including 6 hours documenting questionnaires and 4 hours gathering photos and video, all at 40€/hour.
Rewarding teachers
To value the efforts school teachers have made, Teach Peace treats them to a day out. Remember to factor this cost into your budget.
Guide budget: 50€ per teacher per day.
